Coca-Cola 600 concluded at Charlotte Motor Speedway with Jeff Burton, driver of
the #31 Richard Childress Racing Chevy, posting the fastest time of the day.
New spoiler debuts this week. Was tested at Charlotte

drivers reported no significant handling

this Sunday, and an associate sponsor for the rest. They debuted with the team

Kasey Kahne is in
the final year of his driving contracts and as such are considered a prize free
agents in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Silly Season class. Kahne has said that how
Richard Petty Motorsports performs in the early races this season will go a long
way towards determining whether he re-signs with the team or moves elsewhere in
2011. Asked by SPEEDtv.com Tuesday if he had come to a decision about whether to
stay at RPM or move on, Kahne said, "Not yet. ... I feel like we've had a pretty
good five races seven if you count the other two (Budweiser Shootout and
Gatorade Duel) to start the year so I feel pretty good about where we're at
and where we can still go this year." And despite being 23rd in points, Kahne
said he was optimistic that his team could rebound and he could qualify for the
Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Earnhardt Ganassi

#88-Dale
Earnhardt Jr. is NASCAR's highest-paid driver for a second straight year with
earnings of $30 million in 2009. Earnhardt has had little racing success the
past two years, with only one win at the track. He finished a disappointing 25th
in the Sprint Cup standings last year, but was voted NASCAR's most popular
driver for a seventh straight year. Forbe's earnings estimates include salaries,
endorsements and the drivers' share of track winnings and licensing income.
Earnhardt's immense popularity translates into big dollars in each of these
areas outside of track winnings. "Nascar needs Dale Jr. to be competitive,
because he is so closely associated with the success of the sport. [As] go the
fortunes of Junior, so goes Nascar," says Ardy Arani, managing director of
Atlanta-based Championship Group, a motor sports marketing consultancy. The top

Forbe's reports
that the average NASCXAR Sprint Cup team generated $92 million in revenue last
year, a drop of 4%. Teams were hurt by a 19% decline in Nascar licensing
revenue. Total retail sales of licensed merchandise were $1.63 billion in 2009
compared to $2 billion the prior year, according to License Global magazine. The
economic downturn and a saturated licensing market helped spur the decline.
Another factor was the near bankruptcy of leading Nascar merchandise company
Motorsports Authentics. Despite the revenue drop, the average operating income
(earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) for the top
teams was flat at $7 million. Teams have trimmed budgets by reducing head count,
tracking inventory more closely and cutting travel budgets. One area that has
not yet been affected is driver salaries--but those cuts will come once
contracts start to expire.
NASCAR's top team remains
Hendrick Motorsports worth $350 million, the same as last year. They are the New
York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers and Manchester United rolled into one. They
dominate on and off the track with the best drivers (home to the top three
finishers in the 2009 Sprint Cup) and the most popular racers (three of the four
best-selling drivers for licensed merchandise). Hendrick Motorsports is worth
47% more than the second most valuable team, Roush Fenway Racing. The gap in
value between the two top teams is similar to baseball with the Yankees (64%
more valuable than the Mets) and ManU in soccer (38% more than Real
Hendrick is the sports leader when it comes to
sponsorship revenues, thanks to the success and popularity of its drivers. Its
four cars generate an estimated $115 million in sponsorship revenue annually
from the likes of DuPont, Go Daddy, Lowe's, the National Guard and PepsiCo.
Hendrick cars have the highest budgets in Nascar, but the huge sponsorship haul
allowed Hendrick to turn an operating profit of $20 million last year, the
highest in the sport. The value of Stewart-Haas has risen 23% to $98 million,
which ranks seventh overall. It is one of only three teams to see an increase in
value over last year.

The only question
about fuel injection in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series is when it will be added
not if. Not far behind could be the use of an ethanol-based fuel. Robin
Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition, said that plans remain set for
fuel injection to debut in the Cup series next season and that NASCAR's use of
an alternative fuel also could come next year. "We should have some more answers
probably in the next 21 days,'' Pemberton said about fuel injection. "I'd say
we're on target, hopefully for early 2011 but it remains to be seen. We can't do
it and screw things up but things are moving along pretty nicely right now.'' As
for using an ethanol-based fuel, Pemberton said: "We're still looking at the
fuel and what ratio percentage that we will use when we get there. "Our goal
when we set out ... was (it) to happen in 2011. We have teams that have been
running on the dynos with E10 and E15 and all the way up to E30. For the most
part it's been E10 and E15.
The 2010 Sprint
Fan Vote, which allows race fans to choose which eligible driver gets to compete
in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, opened today. Voting will continue until one
hour before the start of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race, Saturday, May 22, at

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings, attempted to qualify for the

prestigious All-Star field. The Sprint Fan vote winner will be announced
immediately following the completion of the Sprint Showdown.
Two years ago, Kasey Kahne became the first driver to
parlay his Sprint Fan Vote win into a victory in the Sprint All-Star event. Past
Sprint Fan Vote winners include Ken Schrader (2004), Truex, Jr. (2005), Kyle
Petty (2006), Kenny Wallace (2007), Kasey Kahne (2008 Sprint All-Star Race

Charlie Glotzbach: "That's
the hardest hit that I've ever taken, and that was the first ride to the
hospital from a race. I mean, all the walls I've hit, and wrecked, and I never
got hurt. That was the first time I ever got hurt. So it had to be a hard, hard
hit."
Glotzbach: "I didn't know, I didn't think he (Pearson)
would come down that quick. I thought that he'd probably have his foot on the
brake, but somebody told me that they seen when he hit the wall, it knocked him
out. & I'm really sorry it happened, but I don't think there was anything I
could do about it."
Glotzbach: "I don't
really think it's too risky (for older drivers to race), because it happens to
the young drivers. If you notice, they get hurt, and naturally an older driver
is going to get hurt probably a little easier on account of his bones are, uh,
softer. But, I don't think it's got anything to do with age."
Glotzbach: "You look at the reaction time of the younger
drivers, they hit things, too. They hit other cars so reaction time has nothing
to do with it, I don't think"
Glotzbach:
"Them cars are safe. I mean, they're basically a Busch or Nationwide car with a
fiberglass body on 'em. I mean, they got bars running everywhere and they got
good seats in them and I don't think the car had anything to do with it 'cause
it was a good race car, the one I had."
Glotzbach: "As far as me, how I feel, I'm sore. My
sternum's broke. I got some bruised ribs, and the lower back, uh, there's a bone
cracked down there a little bit or something. They said there were some old
wounds down there, too. But, like I said, I never went to hospital for
nothin'."
Pearson would undergo surgery
on a compound fracture of the left ankle, and that he suffered a fractured
pelvis and fractured right hand. "He is awake and alert, and in good spirits,"
Wozniak said of Pearson, who was listed in fair condition late Saturday night.
